Recent Developments in Türkiye-EU Relations

The relations between Turkey and the European Union (EU) have been the subject of discussion for many years. Recently, the disagreements and difficulties on both sides have increased even more. If we need to look at the recent developments in Turkey-EU relations in general, we can examine the key issues and their possible implications for the future.

When we first focus on the migration crisis, one of the main issues affecting Turkey-EU relations is the migration crisis. Turkey hosts millions of refugees, mainly from Syria, and must seek financial and logistical support from the EU to manage the situation. However, some disagreements negatively affected the implementation of the 2016 EU-Turkey deal.

Turkey's stance on human rights has been a major topic of discussion between the country and the EU. Major issues such as restrictions on freedom of expression and the imprisonment of journalists and political activists have been discussed by the EU and its member states. These concerns negatively affected Turkey's relationship with the EU.

Political disagreements between Turkey and some EU member states were also one of the main reasons for the crisis. Disputes such as territorial disputes in the Eastern Mediterranean and Turkey's military operations in Syria led to the straining of diplomatic relations and the two sides to encounter some crises in this regard.
